Describe the significance of the pituitary gland in vision disturbances.
The pituitary gland sits in the sella turcica, a small indentation of the sphenoid bone. This is situated right behind the optic chiasm where the temporal line of the optic tracts cross. An enlarged pituitary gland can press on the optic chiasm and interrupt the signals of the temporal lines. This causes visual disturbances in the temporal visual fields called bitemporal hemianopia.
