What is the difference between a simile and a metaphor?
While both similes and metaphors are meant to show similarities between two different things, they are not the same. Similes are meant to jump out at the reader using words such as like or as to make the comparison. Metaphors are more subtle and directly compare the two things. What are the differences in the common school system and the progressive school system?
The common school system came about in the 18th century. it was a system in which students of all ages were educated in one class under one teacher. Education was not free. Parents and communities paid for their children to attend through tuition, room, and board for the teacher, or supplying other commodities. The progressive school system came about in the late 1800's and was founded by John Dewey. This was the point when the school system began to move toward educating children toward reaching their full potential, and began encouraging participation in the democratic society. This movement really began to take off in the 1930's.
