Answer:

Yesterday, Johnny and his mother drove to the mall to purchase school supplies. They bought the following items: pencils, paper, and binders. As they shopped, his mother asked, "What else do you need, son?" "I need colored pencils too. They're over there," he pointed. He thanked his mother as they checked out. She replied, "You're welcome." Explanations: A comma must follow a transitional word or phrase. The word "yesterday" and the phrase "as they shopped" both require commas after usage. Commas are also used to separate items in a list; therefore, "pencils, paper, and binders" should have commas placed between the items, but never placed after a conjunction. A colon should replace the semicolon in the sentence "They bought the following items: pencils, paper, and binders." A semicolon is used in between two independent clauses; it typically replaces conjunctions like "and." A colon is used to answer a question the previous sentence proposes. The question created in the above paragraph is, "What school supplies did they buy?" The colon answers. Also, keep in mind that punctuation always, always, always goes inside the quotation marks. "Mother" is not a proper noun, therefore it should not be capitalized unless it begins a sentence. Johnny is a proper noun, therefore, it should be capitalized. Homophones are frequently confused. Two, to, and too; there, their, and theyre; and your and you're are often mixed up. Two refers to the number two. To is used in infinitives and in designated places. "I am going to the mall." "Bonnie is going to jump up and down." Too is another word for also. Both your and their are possessives, while they're and you're are contractions. There, like to, designates a place. "I am going there." Finally, make sure the tense of the sentences always match. The paragraph above is in past tense, therefore, all of the verbs must take the past tense form. "Drove" and "shopped" are the correct tense form.

Question:

Name two authors who were part of the Transcendental period. When did this literary period occur, and what did it entail? What is a bildungsroman novel? Who were Currer Bell, Acton Bell, and Ellis Bell?

Ashton L.
Answer:

Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson are two authors a part of the Transcendental period. This literary period occurred during the mid-nineteenth century; it was a philosophical movement in which writers simply tuned into their senses and nature in order to write about ways of understanding the world. Emerson instructed writers to use a "transparent eyeball," which was a strategy used to absorb every detail of nature. A bildungsroman novel is a novel of development. This type of novel takes a character through many phases of life and changes. An example of a bildungsroman novel would be "The Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" by Harriet Jacobs. Currer Bell, Acton Bell, and Ellis Bell are the pseudonyms that the Bronte siblings used in order to keep their identities secret. Currer Bell was Charlotte Bronte, Acton Bell was Anne Bronte, and Ellis Bell was Emily Bronte. These talented writers used pseudonyms in order to publish their works; female writers were rarely taken seriously or considered talented.

Question:

What is the difference between a simile and a metaphor? What is the difference between a protagonist and antagonist? What is a haiku?

Ashton L.
Answer:

Both similes and metaphors and devices used to make a comparison. A simile, in its simplest form, is a comparison that uses the words "like" or "as." A metaphor, on the other hand, is a comparison without using the words "like" or "as." A protagonist is the main character of any written piece. Typically, the protagonist is the hero of the story. An antagonist is the main "villain" of a written piece. Typically, this character creates conflict and tension throughout a piece. A haiku is a type of poem that contains three lines. In the first and last line, there are only five syllables. In the middle line, there are seven syllables.
