Question:

Find the Derivative of the following equation. 2x^2+3x+1.

Bret H.
Answer:

Using the power rule we know that the derivative of a variable will have a new constant that is equal to the old constant times the exponent. We also subtract a one from the old exponent to get the new exponent. The derivative would be 4x+3+0. Note that we get a zero because a number with and exponent of zero is equal to zero.

Question:

A light poll has a shadow that is 12 feet in length. The tip of the shadow makes a 45 degree angle to the top of the pull. What is the height of the light poll?

Bret H.
Answer:

1. We can use the Tangent function to solve this equation becasue we know that the Tangent of an angle is equal to the Opposite divided by the adjacent length. 2. We can write this is Tan(45 )= $$ \frac{Unknown Length}{12Feet} $$ 3. Lets use the variable x to represent the missing number. 4. Using algebra we can find the the Tan(45) times 12 feet will give us x which is the answer to the question above.

Question:

Please create a solvable equation from the following sentence. On a test the largest score a student recived was larger than the lowest by 25 points. Added together, the two scores would add to get 98. What was the lowest grade in the class.

Bret H.
Answer:

1. We start by stating what it is we are trying to find which is the lowest test score. 2. We then create a variable that will represent the lowest score we are trying to find. 3. We know that the highest score is 25 greater then the lowest. The lowest is represented by the variable L. We need to add 25 to the lowest grade to find the highest. We also know the L plus the highest grade is 98. So 25+L is the highest grade and L is the Lowest grade. We know that these add up to 98 so (25+L)+L=98 . 4. Solving this equation will give us L which is the lowest grade. 5. Add like terms which gives us 25+2L=98 6. Isolate L by itself by subtracting 25 from both sides. This gives us 2L=73. Divide both sides by 2 to isolate L which leaves us with L= 36.5. 7. The lowest score is 36.5%
