Question:

What is the writing process and how can an instructor provide valuable feedback to students' written essays?

Answer:

First, it is best for the instructor to teach students to understand the difference between various genres of writing, like summary writing, expository writing, literary analysis, academic writing, and argumentative writing. Second, students must learn to develop and organize their thesis, supporting details, commentary, and quotations into an outline so they can organize their thoughts in a logical manner in a first draft. The instructor may then give either verbal or written feedback on a first draft regarding organization before touching on grammar, providing opportunities for students to self-correct while being careful not to overcorrect the students' writing. Finally, common grammar errors can be addressed individually or as a class for the second and/or third draft.
