Question:

What was Ayn Rand telling her readers about society and politics in her book "Anthem."

Reuben B.
Answer:

Rand was attempting to show her audience that collectivism has great faults. While the characters, and every single living person, in her book are all considered equal by the government, they are equal in a way that diminishes their individual qualities. As a result of the characters in Rand's book relying solely on collective thought and being, they are completely unable to express themselves as individuals. Rand is commenting on political ideologies such as communism that share this view that all people should be completely equal with none having qualities that put them above others. She is telling her readers that collectivism and communist ideology is damaging to humans and that individualism should be something that is celebrated.

Question:

Solve for X, when x=5x+3. Include all signs in your answer.

Reuben B.
Answer:

First, in order to solve for X, all X variables need to be on the same side of the equal sign. In this case, I will subtract 5x from both sides in order to have all of the x variables on the left side of the equal sign: x = 5x + 3 -5x -5x I calculate 1x-5x, and find that I now have -4x leaving me with the following equation: -4x = 3 In order to solve for X, I will now have to divide both sides by -4 in order to isolate X: -4x = 3 ____ _____ -4 -4 This step leaves me with the X variable standing alone on the left side (remember that when you divide by a negative number, the entire value becomes negative): x = -3/4 And thus the answer is X is equal to -3/4.
