What is critical thinking and why is it important in writing?
Critical thinking is all about using your mind to constantly question and evaluate what you think, hear, and read. It is vital in academic writing to look at all possible sides of an argument-- whether you agree with it or not! A good critical thinker is curious and eager to critique ideas by providing plenty of evidence to either support disagree with an idea. When writing an academic paper, it is vital to compare and contrast ideas from different authors in order to come to your own conclusion about what you have read.
What are the characteristics of Southern Gothic literature and who are a few important authors in this genre?
The Southern Gothic subgenre of literature is characterized by themes that are unique to the American South: that is, stories that could only take place in an American setting with distinctly Southern elements. Mysterious phenomena (sometimes paranormal in nature, sometimes caused by mental illness), the destruction of the American Dream (often represented by crumbling mansions and depleted family fortunes), and cultural issues such as racism, classicism, poverty and sexism are often addressed. Southern Gothic novels are known for their dark humor and unique perspective related to the troubling history of the South. Some of the most notable examples of American Gothic authors are Carson McCullers, Flannery O'Connor, William Faulkner, Harper Lee, and Toni Morrison.
