Question:

When writing a paper, what sort of tips should you take into consideration to make your paper as strong as it could possibly be?

Answer:

When it comes to writing, the best advice I could give is to start as soon as possible. I know for me, I always give myself enough room to account for writer's block. That's why you should NEVER start writing last minute. It's always the best plan of action to do a little bit every day, and when you feel yourself start to get tired, stop immediately and come back to it with a fresh mind. If you force yourself to continue writing when you know you don't feel like it, it will compromise the quality of your work. To make sure your paper is strong from beginning to end, it's important to have self-awareness about your own work ethic. In addition, don't be afraid to use a thesaurus! It's a surefire way to make sure you're captivating your reader with your elevated vocabulary! Make sure you still sound like yourself though because that's when your own creativity shines through! If you learn the basics of writing and keep these tips in mind when it comes to writing a paper, you can execute a polished and perfected paper in any subject you choose!

Question:

On Twitter, there was a video that went viral of a baby touching a lit candle on his birthday cupcake. However, when all the mothers screamed as he touched the candle, he got scared and began to cry. What is the psychology behind this?

Answer:

This can be explained by the famous Plexiglass Experiment. There was a famous experiment in developmental psychology of a baby crawling across a plexiglass illusion that looked like a cliff. In order to get to their mother, the baby had to crawl over what looked like a cliff. Babies are actually highly intelligent, so logically, the baby thought it may fall if it crawled over. However, the baby based its decision to crawl over on whether or not the mother looked happy or scared. If the mother looked happy, the baby felt safe enough to crawl over without a second thought. If the mother looked scared, the baby would not crawl on the plexiglass but instead remain stationary. This is rooted in the psychological concept called social referencing. Babies often look to their mother's reactions to tell them what is or isn't safe. Even if a baby does something that may hurt them, if the mother is happy or playful while the baby is doing that, the baby will not be scared or cry. The baby in the viral Twitter video cried not because of the pain of touching an open flame, but rather the screams of all the mothers scared him. The screams told him he did something dangerous, and that's why he was scared and began to cry.

Question:

What is the difference between sex and gender? Why is it important to understand the difference between the two?

Inactive

Answer:

Sex is a biological concept that refers solely to genitalia, while gender is a social construct but also a performance. Although sex is a social construct as well, it is biological and has phenotypical characteristics. It is important to understand the difference between the two because they are often conflated to be interchangeable when that is actually not the case. The conflation between the two is rooted in biological determinism, which means that sex is believed to be a determinant of gender and that gender is permanent. This is also the root of many transphobic arguments, however, the truth is that sex does not determine gender and both sex and gender can exist on a spectrum.
