If my patient in a non-clinical setting complains of a severe headache that he's never had before, what are some things I should assess before determining if emergency care is needed?
1. Start with your subjective assessment, meaning have the patient explain, when the pain started, where it is located, what relives it or makes it worse. Ask where the pain is on a scale of 1-10. 2. Obtain a brief medical history of allergies, medical conditions, medications, illnesses and surgeries. 3. Assess for any injuries, do a neurological check, assess skin color and take vital signs. 4. If any neurological findings are abnormal, or the patient experiences chest pain or difficulty breathing call an ambulance. If vital signs or other findings are outside normal limits, call the Dr. and ask the best action to take.
