Question:

Why did France and England, who diligently opposed opium usage amongst their own citizens, force China to legalize the opium trade in the settlement of the 2nd Opium War?

Answer:

The Chinese economy was largely self-sufficient during this period and did not value goods produced by foreign sources. The result was a major trade imbalance where European silver had been flowing into China for centuries to purchase Chinese goods but little silver left. By fostering widescale drug addiction European powers were able to create a demand for their goods (ie. opium) within China and reverse the trade deficit.

Question:

What was the role of newspapers in the lead up to the Spanish-American War?

Answer:

American news papers including those owned by Pulitzer and Hearst published exaggerated accounts of Spanish atrocities in Cuba in order to create attention grabbing headlines and sell newspapers. This increased public fervor and anti-Spanish public opinion in the US. By the time the USS Maine accidentally exploded, the American public was fully read to believe that malicious Spanish action was to blame.

Question:

What is the "liberum veto" and how did it affect the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth's ability to govern?

Inactive

Answer:

The "liberum veto" is a parliamentary rule that meant that any member of the Polish-Lithuanian legislature had the ability to nullify any legislation under discussion and end the legislative session immediately. The result is that legislation was rarely passed and foreign powers frequently interfered in domestic politics by bribing legislative members to block necessary reforms.
