Question:

How do I greet someone in Italian? When do I use the formal tense?

Jackie B.
Answer:

To greet someone, you want to understand whether or not your relationship is formal or informal, and then proceed from there. If your relationship is informal, as in your relationship is with a peer or a family member, you might greet that person: Ciao! Come stai? (Hello! How are you?). If your relationship with the person is formal, is in your relationship is with a teacher or a stranger, you might greet that person: Buongiorno! Mi chiamo John. Come sta? (Hello! My name is John. How are you?)

Question:

What is the easiest way to graph an equation?

Jackie B.
Answer:

Take the independent variable x, and the dependent variable y, and put them into the equation y = mx + b where b is the y-intercept and m is the slope. Calculate the y-intercept and plot it onto the graph, and then use the slope (m) to graph the line. The slope can be used to graph a line because the slope is always "rise/run". Therefore if the slope is -3, the line can be graphed by moving 3 down from the y-intercept and a positive one to the right.

Question:

How do you calculate the dead weight loss created by a price ceiling or a price floor?

Jackie B.
Answer:

In a market, a price ceiling and a price floor are prices that a government imposes on the market either above or below the equilibrium price. To calculate the dead weight loss created by these - one must impose the new price onto the market model and compare the state of consumer and producer surplus at this new price to the state of consumer and producer surplus at the equilibrium price. What one will find is that the consumer and producer surplus has changed so that the triangle beneath or above the equilibrium price needs to be accounted for.
