Question:

When are the appropriate situations to use a comma, semicolon, and colon?

Answer:

A comma should be used after a dependent clause, a conjunction, or to set off an appositive. Ex. "People tend to overreact these days, which can be attributed to many factors." A semicolon should be used to connect two independent clauses which are similar enough to be used in one sentence. Ex. "I wanted to buy a sandwich on my lunch break; I didn't think that finding a cafe in this city would be so tough." A colon connects two sentences, the second of which accentuates or further explains the first. Ex. "She was incredibly excited: the combination of her promotion and recent engagement seemed almost too good to be true."

Question:

What are three traits of the Greek Severe sculptural style which differentiate it from its former Archaic style and its following Classical style?

Answer:

1.) Sculptures composed in the Severe Style exhibit thick and heavy eyelids. These are differentiated from the previous bulging, almond-shaped eyes characteristic of the Archaic style. 2.) Severe sculptures have a neutral or even down-turned mouth. This serves as the transition between the Archaic Smile and the more naturalistic mouth shape of the Classical style. 3.) The musculature of Severe sculptures is much more naturalistic than that of the Archaic period. Instead of sitting atop the skin as often seen in Archaic sculpture, Severe musculature sits atop the skeletal structure of the sculpture and below the tendons and skin. The muscles are visible, but are not nearly as plastic and incised as in the previous style. It demonstrates a transition to the realism of Classical sculpture.

Answer:

Structuralism, as coined by Claude Levi-Strauss, seeks to demonstrate that human behavior follows distinct patterns and rules throughout different cultures. These aforementioned patterns do not serve to determine culture, but function within the realm of culture itself.
