A bowling alley charges five dollars to rent shoes and $2 dollars per person a game. If you and your sister have $16 dollars, how many games can you and your sister play.
Our equation looks like this: 2S+2G=16. We know S is 5, so this becomes 2*5+2G=16, which becomes 10+2G=16-->2G=6. This becomes G=3. You can play three games!

If I can bake 80 cookies in two hours, how many can I bake in three hours?
We need to know how many cookies I can bake in one hour- to do this we divide 80 cookies/2 hours and find we can bake 40 cookies in an hour. For three hours we multiply 40 cookies/hour times three hours and get 120 cookies!

Three friends, Adam, Brandon, and Cathy went to lunch. Before tipping, Adam's meal was two dollars more than Cathy's, and Brandon's meal was 1 dollar less than the average cost of the three meals. Adam wants to tip 10% of his meal's cost, Brandon wants to tip 17% of his meals cost, and Cathy wants to tip 15% of her meal's cost. If the total bill before tipping was $48, how much is the bill after tipping?
First, we need to find the cost of each meal before tipping. (We will use each friends first letter of their name): A+B+C=48 We will start by looking at Bill's meal- if it is a dollar less than the average, than we need to know what the average is: 48/3 is 16. Therefore, B+1=16. B=15 Now our equation becomes A+15+C=48 -->A+C=33 We know that Adams meal is two dollars more than Cathy's. As such, we can say that A=C+2. We can now substitute this in our equation: A+C=33 becomes C+2+C=31. This reduces to 2C=31, which reduces to C=15.5. Now A=15.5+2=17.5 We now have each friends cost of their meal: A=17.5, B=15, and C=15.5 We now figure out how much each meal is with the tip: Adams meal is 17.5*1.1=19.25 Brandon's meal is 15*1.17=17.55 Cathy's meal is 15.5*1.15=17.83 When we add these, we find that the total bill was $54.63
