Question:

As a basketball is dropped and bounces, the ball never returns to its original height. Why doesn't the basketball return to its original heights?

Answer:

This is due to the fact that during the conversion of energy from potential to kinetic and back to potential the basketball comes in to contact with the ground and some of the energy is lost to friction and is transferred to thermal energy. This is why the basketball does not return to its original height.
