Why do I need to study Shakespeare and how do I understand his writings?
Shakespeare wrote plays that pushed the envelop during his time, and were enjoyed by all. He introduced interesting topics that were entertaining and captivated the audience. His plays and sonnets are well written and well known throughout the world today. Common themes and core elements found in Shakespeare's plays can be found in modern literature and film today. How many times have you seen or read a story about forbidden love (Romeo and Juliet) or family drama that involves the death of a parent (Hamlet) or even a person who is power hungry and stops at nothing to obtain what they want (Macbeth)? There are many more examples of common themes that started with Shakespeare. We study Shakespeare because his work still influences writers today. If we truly focus and study Shakespeare it will be easier to understand his writings. If you find yourself struggling there are many editions of his plays that have been translated to modern English.
How do I analyze and write about literature?
Literature is more than just reading a book or a specific text. It is about understanding it. We need to be able to understand the culture, time period, and language of the piece. To be able to analyze and then write about a piece of literature we need to be able to understand the author, the place, and the time it was written in. We then need to find parts of the text that we enjoy or have questions about and study them. Then we relate those parts of the text to a theme or topic that we can explore more on.
