How are Horatio and Laertes both foils for Hamlet?
Horatio is extremely loyal and consistent while Hamlet is wavering and can be temperamental. While Horatio and Hamlet are friends, Horatio's comforting and steadfastness serves to highlight Hamlet's volatility and tendency to lash out and be impulsive. Laertes is a foil for Hamlet because they act differently in the same situation. Both characters are attempting to avenge their father but they have different approaches. Hamlet is weighed down by the moral implications of the task and often backs out of his murderous plans. Laertes confronts the prospect of murder voraciously and does not let moral dilemma and obstacles stand in his way. These characters are exact opposites which makes their rivalry in the play much more intense and stark.
How did gender roles change from the 1950s to the 1960s?
In the 1950, the American family is defined by a male head of household. The man and father figure makes the money and decisions in the house. Women were typically homemakers and took care of the children along with other household duties like cooking and cleaning. After the counter-culture movement on the 1960s, women start joining the workforce and because of their newfound sexual freedom and the invention of the birth control pill, women start to marry later and have less children in order to work towards careers. Though the male is still usually dominant in the household, women's pursuit of careers and the new structure of relationships and family start to begin to achieve equality between the sexes.
