Question:

How do you assess a student's Spanish language abilities?

Answer:

Traditionally, language ability is tested in 4 categories: writing; reading; listening; and speaking. However, we know that, in practice, every student is unique and brings their own skills and qualities to language learning, making judging a student's language level far more complex. From previous contact with a language as a child, to complementary experience with language like reading literary poetry, or a passion for foreign films or gastronomy, each student has a wealth of (perhaps yet untapped) abilities that they can draw upon to boost their language learning. When teaching a language, it's important to remember that the final goal is not always to tick a box on a form, but actually prepare a student for real-life use of the language. For this purpose, the tutor must find each student's special 'super powers' and help them nurture these elements to their maximum ability, respect their personality (introvert/extrovert). If this is balance is found, the student will build knowledge and confidence, so that they can interact comfortably, in their own way, in their chosen language, both in real life and in traditional academic tests.

Question:

Is marketing still relevant?

Answer:

Marketing used to be pure sales; sunny adverts placed in the newspaper, or cheery commercials running on the radio. Today, marketing has taken on a new force, moving further into the realms of psychology, data, technology and politics. Marketeers today are more relevant than ever, having a hand not only at selling products, but actually creating campaigns that spark debate, shift culture and affect elections. Working in marketing nowadays requires responsibility, and offers its professionals a cross-over between creativity, culture, poetry, visual media, and analytics.

Question:

Are you learning English language as a foreign language, or are you a native speaker delving into the world of literature and linguistics?

Answer:

I have a degree in Linguistics, have worked as a professional translator, and am a teaching assistant and tutor. I'm bilingual having lived in Spain for 11 years, which has given me a deeper understanding of language use. My lessons are highly personalised, according to your interests (music, gastronomy, popular culture, film, etc.), and the main aim is to have fun in addition to learning!
