Question:

What are some helpful strategies to turn to when you are having trouble coming up with a hook for your essay?

Answer:

Sometimes, the first sentence of an essay--otherwise known as the hook--can be the most challenging to write. When I find myself staring at a blank page and limited ideas, I try to open with a quote, statistic, or question. Narrowing your thought process to these three categories can minimize the intimidation of starting a paper!

Answer:

In the U.S. presidential election of 1824, although Andrew Jackson earned the popular most votes, none of the candidates received the required number of electoral college votes to win the presidency. Therefore, the decision was left to the House of Representatives. Ultimately, John Quincy Adams won the election.

Question:

How do you distinguish between a simile and a metaphor?

Inactive

Answer:

Keep your eyes peeled for "like" or "as"! If either of these two words is used in the phrase (i.e. she is as fast as a cheetah or hungry as a horse) than it is a simile; if neither of these two words is used (i.e. she has the heart of a lion) then you are dealing with a metaphor.
