Question:

What is missing in the sentence below? ¿Donde puedo encontrar un taxi?

Answer:

There is an accent missing in the word donde. To correct the sentence, add an accent over the o. Below is the correct sentence: ¿Dónde puedo encontrar un taxi? Donde is a relative pronoun. This means that it introduces relative clauses. When used as a relative pronoun, the word donde does not use an accent. However, when used in a question, direct or indirect, donde is written with an accent because it functions as an interrogative and exclamatory pronoun. Therefore, words used to ask a question, like que, cuanto, adonde, cual have an accent.

Question:

What are some examples of symbolism in literature?

Answer:

In literature, symbolism is a literary device. Symbols can represent ideas or meanings that are abstract. For example, here we have a passage from Chapter 2 of Jane Eyre: "Daylight began to forsake the red-room; it was past four o'clock, and the beclouded afternoon was tending to drear twilight. I heard the rain still beating continuously on the staircase window, and the wind howling in the grove behind the hall; I grew by degrees cold as a stone, and then my courage sank. My habitual mood of humiliation, self-doubt, forlorn depression, fell damp on the embers of my decaying ire" (Eyre 17). Characters, objects, and colors are all examples of symbols. One symbol we see here is the color red. Red can represent anger, passion, femininity, violence, sexuality and so forth. Through the use of symbolism, Charlotte Brontë conveys to the reader the idea that the red room is a dark and violent space that traumatizes and haunts Jane. As we see in the passage, symbolism is a useful and revelatory literary device that can help readers better understand a character's thoughts and navigate the world of a text.
