The US form of government is misunderstood as being a democracy. What form of government does the US more closely resemble?
The US government is a democratic-republic after the Roman Republic. A democracy allows everyone's voice to be heard while a republic has the voice of the people spoken through a representative. In the United States, the people elect representatives to speak for them in Congress there by fulfilling the democratic aspect while also fulfilling the republic aspect.

The Roman Empire is one of the most well known empires in the world, with records and artifacts giving historians today a glimpse into what life was life during the empire. However, the Roman Empire was not always an empire. What form of government did the Romans use prior to becoming an Empire under Julius Caesar?
The Roman Empire was a republic prior to the formation of the Roman Empire. The Roman Republic was found in 509 B.C.E and ended when Julius Caesar was named dictator for life in 44 B.C.E. Julius Caesar was assassinated by members of the Roman senate and his nephew and heir, August would become the Caesar of the Roman Empire.

The American Revolution is seen today as the American Colonist rebelling against the British government. However, what did the American Colonist hope to do prior to war with England?
The American Colonists where in fact British subjects and though ultimately went to war for Independence, the colonists originally wanted to have representation in the British Parliament to have their voice heard. This was not the case and the colonies and Britain ended up in a War for Independence.
