Subject: Quality Management
What is Quality Management and what does it have to do with nursing?
Quality Management is focusing on what is working and what is not working. If it is not working, we need to ask why. Why is the best question in nursing! It takes you down a path of curiosity rather than judgement. Why did the patient fall? Why did the nurse give the patient the wrong medication? We have all dealt with judgement and many people respond with their defenses slamming up. Instead, if we ask the question why, we can dig down into the root of the problem and realize maybe the system has a gap and a new policy and procedure needs to be created to close that gap. Why is this so important? To improve the quality of cares we provide to the patients and to decrease medical errors that can cause harm to a patient. In healthcare, quality management is never completed! There is always room for improvement.
Why should I become a nurse?
Everyone needs to find this answer within themselves. Some learners have told me about a scenario where a nurse helped them or a family member and this experience changed them. They wanted to have that ability to help others in such a positive way. Others have shared negative experiences in healthcare and feel that they can do better. This sense that they know they can do better grew into a passion to create change in an ever-growing world. Overall, most people want to be part of something greater than themselves and create a positive change in this world. Nursing is a way, a direction, that guides them down that path.
What are some barriers that adult learners experience when trying to succeed in completing a college program?
Time management is one of the biggest barriers for adult learners. Many adult learners have families, work and other obligations that make going to college almost impossible. Every learner has to decide if their goal is worth the struggle. Something has to give and only the learner can decide what will be sacrificed. The college and faculty cannot make that decision for you. A strong support system with the college and the learner's family goes a long way. Having a discussion with your current employer about your goals and a need in flexibility in your work schedule is essential.
