TRANSLATION THE FOLLOWING It was a Monday and Hannah went for her morning jogging. She liked the fresh morning breeze against her face and the humid forest in which she takes her rest. But that day was not like any other. As she entered the forest, she heard a kitten screaming for help. As Hannah was an animal lover, she instantly started searching for the abandoned kitten. It did not take her long to find it. She picked up the kitten and returned home. "Mom, look I have found a kitten! It should be very hungry and tired", Hannah said.

What is the main function of esters?
(i) Explain the role of auxin in the elongation of plants. (ii) Describe selective reabsorption
(i) - molecules of auxin bind onto receptors on the cell surface membrane - the binding stimulates ATPase proton pump and move H+ from the cytoplasm into the cell wall -there is a decrease in the pH of the cell wall, this decrease in pH activates expansin protein in the cell wall and breaks down non-covalent bonds. - water enters by osmosis and cell expands and elongates. (ii) - Selective reabsorption occurs in the proximal convoluted tubule - the PCT is surrounded by many capillaries - the lumen of the PCT and the capillary is separated by an endothelium of the capillary, a basement membrane and cells of the PCT - Na+ is actively transported out of the PCT lining into the blood capillaries by Na+-K+ pump - Na+ concentration is decreased in the PCT lining - Na+ diffuse along a concentration gradient from the lumen of the PCT into the lining cells only through special carrier proteins. - these carrier proteins carry other molecules along with Na+, such as glucose, amino acids, and ions. This is called co-transport - water then follows by osmosis - the molecules diffuse into the blood capillaries as well as the water.
