Subject: Study Skills
What do previous tutoring students say or reflect about my skills helping them study?
One of the services I provided as an Athletics tutor was helping student athletes organize their classwork and provide them with overall academic advice. In tutoring I aimed to teach some of the studying skills I was lucky enough to learn early to my students, and not just teach them the content. Several of my tutoring students were at-risk and did improve their grades, as well as their comprehension.
Subject: World History
Why should I learn World History?
No matter where you live, you're part of the world! In all seriousness though, I promise to make history as interesting and memorable as possible.
Subject: US History
Does History have to be a boring list of facts and dates?
No! I personally did not like the subject of history until about age 16, when an excellent teacher showed me that history is surprisingly dynamic. The problem is that with the way history is often taught, it often is boring. Students are given a list of study terms to memorize the meaning and relevance of for a few multiple-choice tests, on which their entire grade relies. In my own teaching, I aim to change that experience for the students. Students may or may not leave my classroom as history majors, but through keeping history relatable, engaging, and personal I hope they can leave appreciating its importance.
