Why is learning to write important to how we communicate?
From my experience, knowing how to write well is important to all facets of life; writing is an important communication skill, whether we are writing to apply for a job or writing an email. Learning how to write for a target audience will help with your communication skills.
Why is literature important?
Books can take us outside of ourselves; they can introduce us to worlds that we may never experience, and people whose values and cultures are different than ours. Literature expands our horizons about the smallest of places and the world at large. If we find ourselves in situations where people are discussing a variety of topics, literature can help us engage with others. Through literature, we learn to think, read, and write critically.
For most students, creative writing is about expressing yourself. However, writing is a craft. Write a short response detailing what you think is meant by the writing craft. How, for example, would you explain why the setting is important to a story?
The setting of a story is more important than novice writers might understand. All too often, novice writers forget about the power of setting and end up with stories that appear to take place in a vacuum. Here are a few ideas to contemplate about setting. Setting can mirror or express a character's emotional state of mind; setting can offer concrete and sensory detail to give readers the sense of being in a specific place; and, setting can create what John Gardner calls a vivid and continuous dream. The reality of a story is controlled by setting, no matter the genre.
