What is the purpose of the library and why are librarians important to this function?
Access to information is a human right, the library exists to provide this right. All people have the right to seek, to learn, and to choose for themselves and while the library is an excellent repository for all kinds of information and materials, the librarian is just as important in teaching how to use this incredible tool. While a librarian may not be able to answer your question, she knows how to find the answer, and more importantly she knows how to teach you to find the answer so that next time you have a question, you are empowered to use the tools to find the answer yourself.
Subject: World History
Why is it beneficial to approach the study of history from a global perspective?
Events in history do not exist in a vacuum, seemingly dispirit events can trickle from the same source or evolve from related incidents. We know that history is prone to repeating itself, but it also stutters, with similar incidents occurring in rapid succession within short periods of time. The spread of information and inspiration across the globe is as critical to understanding events within a time period, as understanding that global events likely inspired the creators of the ideas themselves. Events like climate change, natural disasters, and imperialism reverberate in our time, but they also rippled in their own, changing the course of history and the fate of human kind as a whole.
Subject: Art History
What is the importance of studying art alongside historical events?
Without studying the art of a specific time, the student is left with only half the information they could use to learn about the period. To know the events of a time and its geographical location are obviously critical to understanding overall history, but learning the art gives a much deeper understanding of the attitudes, appeals, and nuanced perspectives of a culture. The reasons why certain artists were or were not popular in their own time, the symbols, settings, and style they used, the tools and materials that were available to them, and their own life experiences contribute to broader understanding of the influences at play in a given time period, that cannot be gleaned from a less complex summary of events.
