Question:

What kind of strategies would you use to begin a paper?

Answer:

First, I would start with an idea, an argument, or thesis. Then I would begin researching as much as I could about the topic. During this time, I would collect each relevant source and compile an annotated bibliography so that I could keep track of each source with my own annotations and proper citations (as per the required format). Next, I would reassess my thesis and consider if I have changed my argument or perspective on the subject. From there, I would create an outline with the quotes, terms, and concepts I want to use from my chosen sources. Then I would write, write, write. After the first draft, I would make a revision plan and rework my outline. Finally, I would have a professional (possibly a writing tutor!) look over my draft so that I could improve my writing.

Question:

Why does Toni Morrison use magical realism to frame Beloved?

Answer:

Magical realism allows for realistic and fantastical events to exist on the same plane. Morrison uses Beloved as a conduit for the collective memories of enslaved Africans after slavery's abolition in the United States. This character's fantastical appearance lends to the idea that the unseen, generational trauma lives on in black individuals and their communities.

Answer:

Judith Butler explains that gender is a performative act and therefore repeated gendered actions reify the individual's gender.
