Beethoven’s 5th Symphony 1st movement opens with a bold fortissimo statement of the iconic four-note motive; short-short-short-long. This same motive is immediately restated forte further underscoring its significance. The four-note motive is then bounced around the orchestra starting at a piano dynamic but rapidly rising with a crescendo to forte once again. Beethoven’s use of dynamics is a signature element to all of his music.
