Questions

Subject: Writing

Question:

How will I help you with your thesis writing?

Answer:

In my freshman year, my professor once read my entire paper and summarized in a sentence each of my paragraphs. Through this, I saw that my thoughts were not as organized as I had hoped. This is one of the things I can do for you. Sometimes you just need someone to summarize your points so you can see if and where there is a disconnect between your arguments and your central thesis.

Question:

What is sociology?

Answer:

In a lot of ways, sociology gives you the language to describe what you are already going through. Your experiences are not isolated, the structures and institutions around you produce your experience (society, schooling, prisons, local governments, etc.). Sociology can also be therapeutic for people who feel confused or lonely because you now know that even the more intimate parts of your life say something about the world around you. Sociology is documenting and analyzing people's lived realities.

Subject: College Admissions

Question:

For undergraduate and graduate admissions, how do you write a compelling personal history and statement of purpose? How to get admissions to read beyond the first sentence?

Answer:

Admissions committees admit that the first paragraph and sometimes the first sentence are what matters most. So, you need to find your hook sentence. To do that, you must honestly ask yourself what you want out of the program and then you work backward. For example, I wanted a small school with intimate classrooms, so my first sentence alludes to how I have thrived in more intimate settings.
