Question:

Are libraries necessary in the age of Google?

Inactive
Taylor S.
Answer:

Yes, libraries are necessary in the age of Google. One of the key misunderstandings is how Google results are shown to the public based on algorithms. Libraries and those who work in them (librarians, specialists, etc.) are key in helping individuals find sources for personal and professional research. In the age of "fake news," it's important for libraries to continue to adjust to the information age and assist the public they way they have for hundreds of years.

Question:

Why did Mark Jefferson step down as Chief Cartographer for the Allies during the Paris Peace Conference of 1919?

Answer:

Geographer and Cartographer Mark S.W. Jefferson served as Chief Cartographer for six months. As someone who was well versed in history, language, and historic geography of Europe, he became disillusioned with the carving up of land for victors who were ignoring historic and cultural differences among populations. He feared this would lead to another World War and decided he no longer wanted to be a part of it. After he stepped down, he wrote extensively about Russia and Germany's unfair treatment and warned how reparations insisted upon by the Allies would lead to another War (which proved to be right).

Question:

Explain the contributions our founding fathers made to modern medicine and provide some practical examples.

Answer:

Our founding fathers not only explored new radical government ideals, they also examined ways in which science and medicine could be expanded to help the general population. An example of this is with John Adams who tested the first smallpox vaccine on himself. He did this through exposing himself to the cowpox virus and recording his immune response to it. His research helped popularize the use of it when it came out. Another example of our founding fathers contribution to medicine is George Washington. George Washington's stepdaughter had seizures (many today believe it was a form of epilepsy) and Washington tried to record frequency, length, and manner of seizures in order to provide doctors with information for treatment. Even though he was unsuccessful in saving her life, his notes helped doctors and neurologists form general ideas for what treatments worked and did not work leading to treatments today.
