Question:

What are some issues created through the methods of congressional apportionment set forth in Article 1 Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution?

Inactive

Answer:

A major issue of the single-member districts that were created in the Constitution is that it results in the malapportionment of Members of Congress. What this means is that each citizen is unequally represented in Congress, as each congressional district has a different number of citizens. Thus some districts with more people than others are less represented in Congress, as their Representative is responsible for the interests of more people.

Question:

What was the impact of the construction of the Erie Canal?

Inactive

Answer:

The completion of the Canal in 1825 was significant as it connected Western farmers with Eastern cities. The canal stimulated economic growth by spurring a frenzy of canal-building in other states. Just over a decade later, multiple canals were completed that helped to lower transportation costs. This led to lower food prices in the Eastern U.S., more immigrants being able to settle and immigrate out West, and stronger economic ties between the two regions.
