Consider the equation 3x+6=21. What is the value of x?
The value of x is 5 and can be found as follows. First, we must combine like terms to simplify the equation. In this case that would mean the two integers, 6 and 21. Subtract 6 from 21 to combine them on one side of the equation. This leaves us with a simpler 3x = 15. From here since 3 is being multiplied by x, in order to separate it we must do the opposite and divide. This would combine the like terms (3 and 15) and allow us to find the value of x. So 15 divided by 3 is 5 and leaves us with the final equation x=5.
