Question:

Solve for the values of x in the equation: x^2 - 6x + 9 = 0

Answer:

To solve for x in this equation you must factor it. In this case we can see that the middle number is preceded by a minus sign, this means that in our two factors one will contain a plus and one will contain a minus. Next we should determine how the number 9 can be created from its factors: 3x3 or 1x9. There is only one case in which the numbers multiplied together get 9 and when added get 6 that is 3 and 3. Now we can write out the factors: (x-3)(x+3) = 0, now we can solve for the values of x by placing each factor each equal to 0: x-3 = 0 and x+3 = 0. Adding and subtracting 3 from each side of each equation respectively will give us our values for x: x = 3 and -3
