Questions

Subject: Writing

TutorMe
Question:

What are some of the biggest challenges writers face as they write their essays?

Jerome C.
Answer:

This is one of the most popular questions I have gotten as both a teacher and tutor from students. There are a wide range of answers. First, there is the idea of writer's block, which leads to procrastination and is very common among the population I have worked with. I believe tutoring sessions can really help get people started on whatever they are working on to avoid both writer's block and procrastination. Another challenge is the thesis. I would not be afraid to spend an entire 45 minute or one hour session on this crucial part of an essay. I consider it the most important part of an essay, so it definitely is deserving of our time if necessary, I also always tell students to read their own work aloud or have someone read it to them. This is one of the most important philosophies when I teach writing.

Subject: English as a Second Language

Question:

How can I practice my English?

Jerome C.
Answer:

This is a very popular question I often get from those who are learning English as a second language. My response is always the same. Practice. The only way to truly get better at something is practice. This means speaking with others, whether they are also using speaking it as a second language, but it would also be beneficial to have conversations with native speakers. In addition, I believe one of the best things one can do to improve their English language skills is to hear and read it as often as possible. The news and popular movies are great chances to hear the language used clearly (and in the case of the news especially, correctly).

Question:

What makes English such a challenging subject, even for those who speak it as a first language?

Jerome C.
Answer:

English truly is one of the hardest languages to learn because of the volume of our words. Quite literally, we have a lot more words than so many other languages. Our language is also a strange amalgamation of numerous other languages, so that makes it difficult for there to be consistency. English has rules but then exceptions to those rules. There is also a different between the way we use English orally versus written. Many students sometimes have difficulty processing how they speak versus how they write. One of the best pieces of feedback I often provide is pointing out the ways in which students are writing how they speak.
