Question:

What are the components of a quality essay? In addition, how do you hook the reader and ensure the essay has an impact?

Kimberly L.
Answer:

A quality essay contains a clearly written introductory paragraph that contains a thesis statement and a hook that entices the reader to read further. The introduction also contains brief information that will be expanded upon in the following body paragraphs. Each body paragraph expands on one important point that supports the thesis statement. The last paragraph is the conclusion which brings all points together and restates the thesis statement. An effective, persuasive conclusion includes a call for action from the reader. A well-written essay always includes proper use of grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

Question:

How do you meet the needs of students in your class who have a variety of needs including students who are emerging bilingual students and those with IEP goals?

Kimberly L.
Answer:

I design lessons that allow all students to be actively involved in their learning while working at their own level. I find group work is an ideal way to ensure all students have an opportunity to participate while using their strengths to support teammates and to receive support from teammates as needed. In this way, all students are encouraged to use their areas of expertise. In order to ensure success for my students, I must get to know each of them via formative and summative assessments and through the creation of a supportive classroom by focusing not only on academics but also on social-emotional learning. In addition, I ensure I have reviewed the IEPs of students who have them to guarantee a focus on their goals.
