Tutor profile: Janine H.
What is your Spanish proficiency, since you learned it as your fourth language and you're not a native Spanish speaker?
I would consider myself to be proficient in Spanish. I took Spanish classes in middle school. I earned a Spanish minor in college at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. I have my Bilingual Authorization in Spanish, which allows me to teach multiple subjects in Spanish at the elementary school level. Many native Spanish-speaking families and people have commended me for my spoken and written Spanish abilities, as well as appreciated my support and communication in their children's learning.
Subject: Basic Math
What range of basic math are you able to do?
I can definitely help with math from grades kindergarten to 6th grade. Besides that, I can help with algebra from my own schooling experiences. I found algebra to be fun when I was a student. All the other kinds of math, I would need to review because I haven't done them since middle school, high school, and/or college.
Subject: English as a Second Language
How would you help a non-native English speaker learn English?
I would build a bridge between the speaker's native language and English, using cognates (for native Spanish speakers), visuals, and multiple practice opportunities in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. I would be happy to help an emergent bilingual learn English since English was the second out of four languages that I've learned.
